The Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY) was introduced by the Ministry of Women and Child Development for pregnant and lactating women, aiming to partly compensate them for wage-loss during childbirth and childcare and also provide conditions for ensuring safe delivery and promote good nutrition and feeding practices for infants and young children. It envisions the achievement of these objectives by:
Promoting appropriate practices, care and institutional service utilisation during pregnancy, delivery and lactation;
Encouraging the women to follow (optimal) nutrition and feeding practices for infants and young children, including early and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and
Contributing to an enabling environment for the above practices by providing cash incentives for improved health and nutrition to pregnant and lactating mothers.
IGMSY is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme under which financial assistance is provided as grant-in-aid to the State Government.
In financial year 2010-11 Government of India disbursed Rs. 983.53 lakh to implement the scheme in the State.
